To Have Cosmetic Surgery or Not to Have Cosmetic Surgery? That is the Question. by Lynn Fugaro
We’ve all read stories and seen photographs of people who should have stopped having plastic surgery long ago. Faces that are too tight, smiles that are too wide, eyes that are too open – people who have had too many plastic surgeries don’t even resemble their former selves. Of course, for some that is probably the point. But the question bears asking: How many is too many when it comes to facelifts or any plastic surgery, for that matter?
Well, sadly, The Aging Process never stops. Plastic surgery can’t permanently halt what gravity and Mother Nature have in mind for our bodies. Plastic surgery can only lessen the affects. Help us grow older with a bit more grace and a bit less flabby skin.
Besides, a truly qualified, ethical plastic surgeon will not agree to perform plastic surgery procedures that aren’t truly warranted or advisable – no matter how much money is at stake.
It is called cosmetic surgery for a reason. It isn’t usually lifesaving in nature. Procedures such as facelifts, eyelid lifts, breast augmentations, cheek lifts, even collagen injections for the lips, are all meant to enhance or slightly correct the minor imperfections we see in ourselves when we look in the mirror. These procedures were never intended to change us from a beautiful woman of 45 or 50 into our 20-year-old selves again.
Nor should cosmetic surgery be used to replace good, old-fashioned psychotherapy, either. Too often, men and women turn to plastic surgery because they think bigger breasts or enhanced calves fill some void or insecurity in their lives. For many people, plastic surgery becomes an addiction. They have a little nip here or a minor tuck there, see how nicely those procedures turn out and suddenly they have to try something else. Next thing you know, they are having 3, 4, 5, 6 procedures done at once. Heidi Montag’s name comes to mind.
Keep in mind that most cosmetic procedures are surgeries. They require putting you to sleep while the surgeon cuts and manipulates your body. When you compound the number of procedures done at any given time, the opportunity for substantial blood loss, infection, adverse reaction to anesthesia, to name a few, can become life threatening.
In 2007, more than 12 million cosmetic procedures were performed throughout the US. Some of these procedures included BOTOX® Cosmetic and other injectible “parties” and most assuredly, not all were done by trained medical professionals.
Be smart. Before picking a cosmetic surgeon or submitting to any type of cosmetic procedure, do your homework. Learn all you can about the procedure, including risks and possible outcomes. Find an experienced, well-trained plastic surgeon and have an in-depth consultation with him or her about the procedures you are interested in. Don’t let anyone inject you with anything at a “party”.
